FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A firewall is a network device that manages and monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic, deciding what to allow in and out of the network and what to block. A firewall can be hardware, software or both and is the first line of defence for any business against cyber crime and other online threats.

If you have a PC or a network connected to a public network such as the internet, you are at threat from a variety of online attacks such as hackers, keyloggers, ransomware, malware and trojans. In addition, firewalls allow business owners to better manage their network and their employee productivity by restricting certain sites such as social media or gaming sites within their network.

There are five different types of firewalls available on the market, each with their own market and key uses. These are;  a packet filtering firewall that compares packets to a set of criteria such as allowed IP addresses, packet types, etc; circuit-level gateways that monitor TCP handshakes across the network as they are established between local and remote hosts to check whether the remote host can be trusted; stateful inspection gateways that monitor packets and check whether the packets are established within the relevant TCP session; application level gateways also known as a proxy that filters packets but go further by also filtering based on other characteristics such as HTTP strings; and last but not least, a next-gen firewall which is the latest in firewalls and combines packet inspection with stateful inspection and deep packet inspection.

Firewalls can’t protect against attacks that do not go through the firewall such as data theft by export to DVD or USB or other external storage devices. In addition, firewalls can’t protect against viruses that are loaded onto your network through these various storage devices.
